Basic Information about Austin
Austin is the capital of the state of Texas, an inland city bordering the Hill Country region of Texas. Austin is one of the fastest growing large cities in the United States and is currently the 11th most populated large city in the country. The population of the Austin metropolitan area is about 2.3 million. Austin is home to the flagship campus of the University of Texas, one of the largest universities in the US with a student enrollment in excess of 50,000. Austin has many parks and lakes that are popular for hiking, biking, swimming and boating.
Austin has long hot summers and mild short winters. Average high and low temperatures for May are 86oF and 67oF (30oC and 19oC) and for June are 92oF and 72oF (33oC and 22oC). Austin usually has lots of sunshine and averages about 4” of rain in the months of May and June so rain showers are not uncommon.
Austin is served by the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA) which is about 11 miles from the Hilton Austin, the host venue for ISCAS 2022. The Austin-Bergstrom airport supports around 500 flights/day with direct flights to many of the major airports in the US and limited international service to Europe, Canada, and Mexico. Austin is located along Interstate 35 and US Highways 183 and 290. In addition to normal taxi service, Austin is served by the ride sharing companies Uber and Lyft.
The venue for ISCAS 2022, the Austin Hilton, is located adjacent to the Austin Convention Center with many restaurants and entertainment options a short walking distance from the hotel. But Austin is a sprawling city with many of the area attractions being located some distance from the conference hotel.
In the past two decades, Austin has become a center for technology and business. A number of Fortune 500 companies have headquarters or regional offices in the Austin area including 3M, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Amazon, Apple, Facebook, NXP semiconductors, Google, IBM, Intel, Oracle, Texas Instruments, Tesla, and Whole Foods Market.
Austin is known for its eclectic live-music scene centered around country, blues, and rock. Austin promotes itself as “The Live Music Capital of the World”.
